If you’ve ever tried to plan a schedule for your blog and found it impossible to stick to, this post will help. I’m breaking down how to create a simple blogging routine that fits in and around a busy life.

Because I know what it’s like… you’re juggling running a business alongside family life and everything that comes with that. And while you know blogging is important if you want to grow your audience, connect with your clients, and shine a visibility spotlight on your business, it’s usually the first thing to drop off the to-do list when life gets in the way.

That’s exactly why learning how to create a simple blogging routine that actually works for you can make such a difference.

The truth is, most people love the idea of blogging for their business. They understand the benefits and know how powerful it can be as a marketing strategy. And it’s not for lack of effort or desire that so many people give up before they’ve really got started. Most small business owners would love to blog regularly, the problem is they just can’t seem to stay consistent with it.

A busy week, lack of ideas, low motivation, disappointing results, not enough time… these are all factors that prevent people from blogging consistently. But I’m here to show you that you don’t need to become a burnt-out blogging machine, endlessly churning out post after post and hating every second of it.

By the end of this post, I’ll show you exactly how to create a simple blogging routine, and more importantly, one you’ll actually stick to.

Why Your Need A Blogging Routine

As nice as it would be to only write blog posts when the mood takes us, the fact is if that’s the strategy you’re going for, it won’t work. Now, I’m not saying you have to be publishing blog posts every single day, or even every week for that matter. It’s important to be realistic in your expectations. But if you want blogging to be effective in marketing your business, growing your audience, and increasing your online visibility, consistency is crucial.

When you’re consistent with your blogging routine, there are two things that happen:

  1. Your audience get to know when to expect new content from you.
  2. Search engines begin to see you as a trusted and reliable source.

Both of these factors build trust, strengthen your SEO, and boost your visibility. But there’s one more really important thing that happens when you create a simple blogging routine and stick with it. The real benefit to you is that a structured routine reduces stress, eliminates decision fatigue, and stops you second-guessing what content to share next.

When you know how to create a simple blogging routine that fits your life, you take the pressure off and give yourself space to grow. You’ll feel in control, stay ahead of the game, and you’ll never have to worry about coming up with random spur of the moment content ideas ever again. This isn’t about rigid, time-consuming schedules that make you feel swamped or overwhelmed. This is about creating sustainable blogging habits that make your life easier and get you the results you’re after.

How To Create A Simple Blogging Routine That Fits Your Life

Any new routine you introduce needs to fit in with your existing schedule. You’ll no doubt have non-negotiable tasks in your business that perhaps have to happen on certain days or at specific times, so it’s no good trying to squeeze blogging in and around those. Instead, focus on creating a simple blogging routine that feels realistic and sustainable.

You should aim to plan your blog writing in at a time when you feel mentally fresh and at your most creative. But this does also need to fit in around your diary, so it’s about finding a balance. I’ve always been someone who writes best first thing in the morning. However, due to a change in circumstances, that’s no longer possible, so I’ve had to tweak my routine and shift to a different time.

Not gonna lie, it was really hard at first, as I’d trained my brain to believe I could only write at that time of day. But the fact is, if mornings are hectic and you’re racing around trying to sort everyone else out, you’re not going to produce your best work. And that’s exactly what happened to me. I tried to force it and it ended up not happening at all. Cue a two month break from blogging, all because the routine fell apart.

Now, don’t worry, I see you sitting there with a diary packed full of appointments and an ever growing to do list. It seems impossible to find time for blogging, right? That’s why I want you to start with short, realistic time blocks of just 20-30 minutes to get into the rhythm of writing.

If you don’t have time to commit to writing every week, try blocking out time once a month instead. Use that session to batch-create content for the following month. That way, you’ll get ahead of yourself, stay focused on one task, and build a blogging routine that fits in and around you.

Break Your Blogging Routine Into Manageable Steps

So now we know it’s about finding a plan that fits your life, we need to look at how to create a simple blogging routine that doesn’t feel overwhelming. The answer is to break it down into small, manageable stages. That way, you can make progress even on your busiest weeks, without needing huge blocks of time or relying on endless motivation.

Step 1 – Capture Ideas

Keep a notebook or a digital list of blog ideas you can dip into whenever inspiration strikes. If you struggle to come up with topics, this blog post might help you – How to find blog post ideas in everyday conversations.

Every time you think of a new idea, write it down. Over time, you’ll build a mini library of content ideas ready to go, which means no more sitting at your desk wondering what to write about next.

Step 2 – Pick One Topic & Outline

Decide on how many blog posts you want to publish this month and then chose and choose your topics from your idea bank.

Under each blog topic, jot down the key points you want to cover, then turn those into subheadings. This forms the structure of your post and makes writing it later so much easier.

This step should only take you about 15-20 minutes, depending on how many blog posts you’re planning on writing. Remember, you’re not aiming for detail here, just clarity and direction.

Step 3 – Write In Short Bursts

You’ll quickly learn what kind of a writer you are. Some people prefer sitting down to write an entire post in one go, whereas others find it easier to write in short, focused bursts when they can fit it in.

Either way, don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have to finish your post in one sitting. Even just 20 minutes here and there adds up. And those short writing sessions often lead to your most natural, authentic work.

The key to creating a simple blogging routine is progress, not perfection.

Step 4 – Edit & Publish

Give your post a final read through yourself and then put it through a spellchecker to make sure you don’t miss any glaringly obvious mistakes. I often use Chat GPT for this, as you can also ask it to add in more keywords for you, and make suggestions of things you may have forgotten.

And remember, your blog posts don’t need to be perfect. People often get stuck at this point and worry that what they’ve produced isn’t good enough. Stop the overthinking and just hit publish. Done is always better than perfect.

Step 5 – Share & Repurpose

The best bit about sharing blog posts regularly, is that each blog post you publish becomes the foundation for all your other content creation.

Once you’ve hit publish on that one blog post, you can use parts of it to create:

  • Email newsletters

  • Social media captions

  • Short videos or Reels

  • Podcast talking points

By repurposing your blog content, you’re not just saving time, you’re increasing your visibility across multiple platforms, helping more people to find and connect with you.

Make Your Blogging Routine Easy To Stick To

The best answer I can give you for how to create a simple blogging routine you’ll actually stick to is to make sure you don’t overcomplicate, overcommit, or come up with something that is completely unrealistic and impossible to stick to!

When something becomes difficult, we often start to resent doing it. And what then happens is that we very quickly come up with reasons (or excuses) as to why we don’t need to do it any more.

Here are some practical tips to help you stay on track and keep you blogging consistently:

  • Schedule – Timetable a ‘blog slot’ in your weekly diary and treat it like a client appointment.

  • Limit procrastination opportunities – Have your blog notes easy to hand, set blog templates up, keep your SEO checklist in sight. Make everything as easy as possible for yourself.

  • Keep it simple – Use straightforward tools like Google Docs, Canva templates, and Trello boards, to help organise you and to streamline your systems.

  • Track small wins – Progress builds motivation. And the only way you notice progress is to keep track of it. Because even the smallest of wins is a step in the right direction.

A simple blogging routine isn’t about working harder, it’s about working smarter. When you make the process feel easy, consistency starts to come naturally. And once you find a rhythm that fits your life, blogging stops feeling like a chore and starts becoming a natural part of your business growth.

What To Do When You Fall Off The Blog Wagon

It’s inevitable that at some point you may find yourself falling off the blog wagon, or at least having a little wobble. Life happens, and none of us are perfect. As I mentioned earlier, I fell off a little while back and didn’t blog for two months straight – and this is my profession!

Go easy on yourself, but remember the most important thing is to hop back on and get back into the simple blogging routine you’ve created. Don’t treat a hurdle like a failure. It’s not. We’re not aiming for perfection, it’s about recognising what went wrong and figuring out how you can simplify your routine so it feels easier to stick to next time.

At times like this, it’s useful to remind yourself why you’re blogging. And if you’re struggling to remember exactly why you thought blogging for your business was a good idea, let me remind you.

Blogging is a great way to:

  • Connect with your audience
  • Improve your online visibility
  • Grow your business
  • Streamline your content strategy
  • Build brand awareness
  • Show off your expertise

So, let’s get you back to blogging as soon as possible. Choose one simple post on a topic you could easily write about to get you started again. Schedule in some time this week to write, and block it out in your diary as though it’s a client meeting.

Treat it as a non-negotiable, just one small step to get you back in the habit.

Final Thoughts

A blogging routine doesn’t have to be strict or complicated. The most important thing is for it to feel doable. And that means shaping it around your life, your needs, and your existing work routine.

Start small and focus on building momentum. If something isn’t working, tweak it. Simplify it. Make it fit better.

And above all, celebrate consistency over frequency. Showing up regularly, in a way that feels sustainable for you, is what builds long-term success.

If you want to make blogging feel easier and more strategic, you’ll find plenty of helpful posts on the rest of the site.
