If I had a pound for every time someone asked me is SEO dead, I’d have enough money to outsource my own blog posts. Not that I’d want to of course, as content creation is my greatest passion in life, but you get my point!

Questions about stuff being ‘dead’ get bounced around the online marketing world all the blinkin’ time, which not gonna lie is a bit of a nightmare for blog strategists like me. Because the second someone starts harping on about SEO being dead, it’s up to me to set things straight.

Which is exactly what I’m doing in this blog post

Because while some people believe that SEO is no longer the thing your business needs for growth and visibility, I’m here to cut through the BS and explain exactly why you deffo still need it in your marketing strategy.

In this post, I’ll show you how SEO has evolved with AI and what AEO means for your content and business strategy in 2025.

What Is SEO And Why Is Everyone Saying It’s Dead?

Right, before I get started, let me explain the basics of SEO. So, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and it is how search engines like Google list or rank the content on your website. It’s basically a main player in helping people find your website.

Imagine your business was located in some random field in the middle of nowhere. Now, the rest of the world, other business owners, all the other people on the planet, are busy doing their own thing, going about their day, minding their own business, right? And unless they happen to be passing by that field they won’t know about your business. You’re getting barely any visitors, you’re hardly making any sales, and well let’s face it, you’re pretty much invisible!

But let’s just say you started putting up some signs. On the edge of that field, maybe down the road, possibly in the next town. Suddenly people are noticing you. You’re on their radar and they get curious. Once they’ve found you they’ll want to know who you are, what you offer, and how you can help them.

And that my friends, is what SEO does for you. It creates signposts to your business. And those signposts come equipped with clear instructions for search engines to help them rank your website, which in turn helps visitors find you more easily.

Sounds like the dream, I know, which is what makes it even more confusing as to why people are asking is SEO dead?

Enter… AI.

Yep, the robots have got everybody scared. And as soon as people get scared they start thinking everything around them, systems that have been working for years, no longer work. That they’re broken. When they’re not.

SEO has changed, but it’s not dead, and I’m going to show you why that’s the case. But before I do, let’s take a look at how AI is affecting things.

What Is AEO? A Simple Guide To Answer Engine Optimisation?

The new acronym that’s on everyone’s lips is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation). It’s kinda like SEO, but instead of trying to rank your content as high as possible in search results, your main aim is to get your content read out as an answer to a question on Google, Chat GPT, Siri, Alexa etc.

Because the fact is, people aren’t solely relying on Google to search for things any more. Just think of how your own search habits have changed. How often do you now use ChatGPT as a sounding board instead of ‘searching it up’ on Google?

And if you are still using Google, have you noticed what’s at the top of the search results, ahead of everything else… AI Overviews. Yep, even Google is ranking AI generated answers over and above all other content. So, what does that mean for us small business owners who are desperately trying to get our content found?!?

The answer is AEO.

People want answers to questions, solutions to their problems, and they’re expecting a 2-way conversation. But AI still has to get its answers from somewhere. It doesn’t just make it up, it needs sources of information to base it’s responses on.

That’s where your blog content comes in. You see, blog posts that are optimized for AEO becomes a resource for AI. Optimize it well enough and your content will get featured in snippets and AI-generated answers. And that’s where all the cool kids hang out these days!

How AI Is Changing Google Search

As I’ve mentioned, search habits have changed a lot over the past year. Above anything else, people want answers to their questions and they want it NOW!

When you do a Google search a whole tonne of different articles come up. AI generated responses however, provide just one answer. It’s clearer, more direct, and it gives the reader exactly what they want, immediately. I mean it’s no bloody wonder more and more people are using AI tools over Google. It just makes sense.

But let’s make something clear here… that one answer it gives has been crafted from all of those articles that Google would have listed in its search results. So basically, you’re getting the same information, just quicker (because AI has done the sifting through for you) and more to the point. AI summarises info from various sources, and put simply, if you’re not sharing clear and helpful content, you won’t even get a look in.

While I don’t believe you should ever 100% rely on AI to write your content, I think it’s also important not to see AI as the enemy.

AI tools are an incredibly useful addition to your content creation toolkit and I talk more about the ways you should and shouldn’t be using it in my blog post. The fact is, it’s here and it’s not going anywhere, and the way we adapt to that is to understand it and to use it in a way that works for us. Perhaps rather than asking is SEO dead we should instead be curious as to how AI platforms will change traffic distribution to our websites. But in asking that, we firstly need to understand more about it.

AEO Vs SEO: What Small Business Owners Need To Know

It all sounds a bit doom and gloom for SEO then, right? I mean if AEO and AI are taking over how content gets discovered online, then perhaps it really is the end for SEO. Is SEO dead after all…?

To make the differences between SEO and AEO totally crystal clear I’ve created this quick comparison chart for you.

The biggest difference between SEO and AEO is this:

  • SEO helps people find your website.
  • AEO helps people get answers from your content (without necessarily needing to visit your website)

And that right there my friends is why SEO is 100% not dead!

Because if your main aim is to drive more traffic to your website, so that you can attract more leads, sell to people, grow your email list, book more discovery calls etc. AEO isn’t going to help with that. But SEO will.

What This Means For Your Content Strategy

OK, I get it, you’re feeling more confused than ever. Should we be focusing on SEO? Or is AEO better? Like seriously, what the hell should we even be doing with our content right now!?!

Listen, I don’t want you to get bogged down in the details. That’s where overwhelm lies and that’s not what we’re here for. This isn’t about making life difficult. It’s about clarity, purpose, and getting the best results for your business.

I’ve shown you the differences between the two approaches, but I realise it’s a lot easier to understand with examples. So, let’s take a look at the difference in how content would read if it was SEO focussed vs AEO focussed:

SEO Focussed Content

“Looking for ways to increase traffic to your website? In this post, we’ll explore 10 proven blogging strategies to help you rank higher on Google and attract more visitors.”

This content has been optimised for SEO as it targets keywords (‘increase traffic to your website’, ‘proven blogging strategies’, ‘rank higher on Google’, ‘attract more visitors’). It also encourages more clicks as the content promises to provide more in-depth value.

AEO Focussed Content

“The best way to increase website traffic is to publish consistent, high-quality blog content that answers your audience’s questions.”

This content is on exactly the same subject, but gives a direct, clear answer, which is easier for AI tools and voice search to use.

3 Simple Ways To Optimise Your Content For AEO

Here are 3 simple ways that you can optimise your content for AEO. And I’ll let you in on a little secret, this will also do wonders for your SEO in the process!

Answer real questions – This is the biggie. Your blog posts need to be question centred. Use headings that start with: ‘What is…’, ‘How Do I…’ ‘Where Should I…’, ‘Why Does…’. Spend time thinking about what your ideal clients need help with, what they’re searching for, what problems they need solving. And then centre your blog posts around providing answers to those common questions.

Keep your answers short and clear – Clarity is everything. Imagine you’re explaining something to a 10-year-old in 2-3 sentences. Keep it simple, to the point, and avoid any fluffy language.

Structure your content – Help AI tools find your content by structuring it so that it is easily scannable. Make sure you include bullet points, FAQs, tables, lists, subheadings.

You don’t need to be an absolute tech wizard to do this stuff. All of these things are what makes good content. It’s what makes your content interesting and engaging for your readers. They want blog posts that solve problems quickly and clearly. And it’s this type of content that is more likely to show up in AI results and featured snippets.

Is SEO Dead For Small Businesses?

In a word… NO!

SEO is far from dead, it’s just different. And the fact is, even with all these changes, the end goal remains the same. We want more people visiting our website, reading our content, taking next steps, and ultimately we want them spending their money with us.

What’s become abundantly clear to me, and hopefully also to you as you’ve read through this blog post, is that to create the best content you can it needs to be optimised for both SEO and AEO. And that doesn’t need to be as difficult or overwhelming as it sounds and it certainly doesn’t mean more work or extra content.

By including simple on page SEO techniques, such as headings, keywords, images, links etc. and combining it with very clear, direct answers to questions, you can very easily produce content that ticks both the SEO and AEO boxes.  Both generative AI and search algorithms rely heavily on trustworthy, well-structured content. If you get that right, you’ll be optimising your blog posts without even necessarily realising you’re doing it.

AEO is an evolution. It is not a replacement. So, when you next hear someone ask is SEO dead, because trust me you will, you can be safe in the knowledge that you know the answer. And in knowing that answer, you can then take action to ensure your posts are continuing to provide value to your readers.

Now that you know more about SEO and AEO and the ways in which you can navigate this new content landscape we find ourselves in, it’s the perfect opportunity for you to go back and look over your old blog posts. Why not tweak some of your titles, change the structure of your posts, add in some internal and external links, update the content, add in those all important questions.

And if you’re only just getting started with blogging, just think how much more informed you are about the content you should be writing for your audience. Safe in the knowledge that what you create has a purpose, it has value, and it will do the job you set out for it to do – to wave a flag for your business and get people finding you!
